The Trouble With “Hope”

“I hope I’ll make some progress on that project this week.”

“Hopefully, I’ll be able to get myself to study.”

“I hope I can exercise in the morning.”

These are phrases I sometimes hear from coaching clients and students. And while I understand the sentiment behind these expressions of hope, I take issue with the mindset they reveal.

It’s always within your power to do the thing. You have to choose it. You have to use your will.

It’s not up to fate. It’s not up to other people. It doesn’t depend on whether or not it turns out to be convenient.

Don’t wait for the day you feel like doing it. Don’t wait for the stars to align or for it to be easy. If it’s truly something your want, be proactive and make it happen.

Don’t “hope.”

Take action.
