Most healthy behaviors are simple. Eat vegetables. Exercise. Read.
See? Nothing complicated there. Very simple to do.
But unless you have established these behaviors as habits, they’re not easy to do. Simple is not the same as easy.
Meditation is simple. You just sit still with your eyes closed and focus on your breath. But it’s not easy, so if you want to start a meditation habit, you’ll need to be strategic.
The same is true for quitting or cutting back on unhealthy behaviors. Eat less sugar. Don’t buy fast food. Watch less TV.
See? Nothing complicated there. Very simple to do.
But if you’ve let these behaviors become established as bad habits, they’re very difficult to change. Simple is not the same as easy.
Sobriety is simple. You just don’t drink or use other drugs. But the struggle to overcome addiction is so difficult that most people need help. It requires 100% commitment, social support, and a wariness of “The River.”
Now, you can be strategic about willpower and make healthy choices easier. You can choose your willpower battles wisely. You can apply The 20-Second Rule. And you can strengthen your willpower through use.
But you must always be wary of overconfidence.
You should never assume that something simple will be easy.
